What is the Function of Group Therapy?

This form of therapy allows a group of people with a common concern to discuss their experiences and share problem-solving ideas. Facilitated by a leader or therapist, groups may have specific goals or function within a less structured framework.

What Types of Groups Are There?

Types of groups might include:

Groups addressing difficulties associated with beginning and maintaining personal relationships

  • Parenting groups focusing on child rearing challenges and strategies
  • Journaling groups using journals to facilitate self appraisal
  • Stress management groups exploring sources and management techniques
  • Who Might Benefit?

People wanting to learn from the experience of others, and to participate in a constructive problem solving process can benefit.

How is Group Therapy Conducted?

Groups usually meet once a week for about an hour. A group may be time limited or open-ended. A time limited group is characterized by specific objectives while open-ended therapy is guided by more general goals.

Groups are comprised of 4-10 members and are usually conducted by group leaders or therapists. Occasionally a guest speaker might be invited to address the group on a relevant topic
