Lynn C. Todman, Ph.D., Director
Lynn C. Todman is the director of the Adler Institute on Social Exclusion (ISE), a member of the core faculty, and a member of the School's Leadership Team. She earned a B.A. from Wellesley College, a Master's in City Planning (MCP) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from MIT. Dr. Todman's research and teaching interests center on problems of social marginalization, isolation and exclusion experienced by urban communities. Her work focuses especially on the ways in which the structures and systems that comprise and organize American society cause disadvantage in urban communities. Dr. Todman's approach to her work is highly multidimensional, drawing on such diverse disciplines and professions as law, political science, economics, sociology, community and urban development, psychology, medicine, public health, and systems' dynamics. She has spoken at numerous national and international conferences on the problem of urban disadvantage. Her recent research and writings include working papers that explore the relevance of the concept of social exclusion to the American social policy context and the development of a transdisciplinary discourse on social exclusion.
Sherrod Taylor, J.D., Faculty Fellow
Sherrod Taylor is Faculty Fellow at the Adler Institute on Social Exclusion where he conducts public policy research on deprivation, marginalization and poverty issues and teaches psychology, law and social justice. He received his B.A. in history from the University of Georgia, his M.A. in history from the University of New Mexico, and his J.D. in law from the University of Georgia School of Law. He is the author of Neurolaw: Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries and numerous other publications that have appeared in the peer-reviewed and popular presses of six different countries. He is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and a former adjunct instructor at the Emory University School of Medicine. Mr. Taylor is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the American Bar Association, and the editorial board of Brain Injury Professional. He has a keen interest in law and literature and in outsider art.
Janna A. Henning, J.D., Psy.D., C.T., B.C.E.T.S., Faculty Affiliate
Dr. Henning earned her B.A. in Political Science at Indiana University and J.D. in law at the Indiana University School of Law. She earned her M.A. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology at The Chicago School . She has been designated a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress, Diplomate through the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. She also holds a Certification in Thanatology (Death, Dying and Bereavement) through The Association of Death Education and Counseling, and has received advanced training in clinical hypnosis. Dr. Henning teaches courses and conducts research in trauma-focused approaches to intervention, cognitive-affective and biopsychosocial aspects of health and disorder, and intellectual assessment. Her interests include trauma-related dysfunction across the lifespan, dying and bereavement, vicarious traumatization and burnout, social interest and social responsibility, gender and multicultural issues, positive psychology, spirituality and psychology, giftedness, and relational constructivist approaches to therapy. She provides individual and group therapy to survivors of trauma, chronic illness, bereavement, and loss in a group practice setting.
Kerry Cochrane, MA, MSW, Faculty Affiliate
Kerry Cochrane is the Director of Library Services, member of the Academic Leadership Team, and Faculty Affiliate for the Institute on Social Exclusion at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. She currently serves as Chair of Faculty Council and sits on the Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Program committee. Ms. Cochrane earned her BA and MA from the University of Iowa. She also earned a clinical MSW from Loyola University Chicago, and maintains a small clinical practice. Before coming to the Adler School, she held faculty appointments at Loyola University Chicago and at University of Illinois at Chicago. She has extensive experience teaching online research in psychology and related social sciences at the undergraduate and graduate level, in academic materials selection in a variety of formats, and in writing, planning, and administration. As Faculty Fellow she has participated in the development of the strategic vision for the ISE, the creation of Social Exclusion Simulations, and proposal writing.
Christine Hammer, Senior Administrative Assistant
Christine Hammer is Senior Administrative Assistant at the Adler Institute on Social Exclusion. Christine received both her B.A. in history and her M.S.W. with an emphasis in social welfare policy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is currently attending DePaul University's College of Law.
Student Affiliates
Angela Bales, Community Service Practicum
Angela is currently working on her Community Service Practicum with the ISE. She earned her B.S. in Psychology at Purdue University in 2004. Currently, she is a first year PsyD student at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. Angela's role at the ISE is to assist in a healthcare-related research project at the YWLCS.
Laura Rita de Diego Brako, Simulation Coordinator
Laura Rita is a TA for the ISE. She earned her BA in Psychology and Spanish at the University of Ghana-Legon in 2006 and is in her second year of the Masters in Counseling Psychology program at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. de Diego Brako's tasks for the ISE include research, contribution of ideas, and assistance with events.
Avis Edwards, Community Service Practicum
Avis is a first year student at the Adler School of Professional Psychology, where she is pursuing a Masters in Counseling. She earned a B.S. in Sociology from Voorhees College in Denmark S.C. in 2007. Avis' task for the ISE is to conduct research on the success indicators for students at the Young Women's Leadership Charter School.
Luke Fairless, President of ISE Student Association
Luke is a T.A. for the ISE. He earned a B.A. in Sociology with a minor in Psychology from Illinois College in 2005 and a M.A. in Human Services, Child and Family Counseling from the University of Illinois at Springfield in 2006. He is in his first year of the PsyD. program. Luke's tasks at the Institute include database development and the establishment of an Institute student organization.
Elisabeth Houston, Manager of Communications
Elisabeth is a work study student for the ISE. She earned her B.S. from the University of Illinois-Urbana in anthropology and holds a Master of City Planning degree from Harvard University as well as a M.S. in Management from the Alfred P. Sloan School at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Elisabeth has spent much of her career in healthcare policy and planning, association management and financial planning and consulting. Her duties at the Institute include research and management of the ISE's communications strategy.
Amy Joseph, Conference Coordinator
Amy is a TA for the ISE. She earned her B.F.A. at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003 and is currently attending Adler School of Professional Psychology for her Masters in Counseling: Art Therapy. Joseph's tasks for the institute include, event coordination, research, and graphic design.
Joi Love, Community Service Practicum
Joi is a Community Service Practicum Student at the ISE. She earned her B.S. at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in May of 2007. Currently, she is enrolled in the Masters in Counseling program at the Adler School. Joi's tasks for the ISE include research and program evaluation for the Yong Women's Leadership Charter School.
Crystal McLain, Community Service Practicum
Crystal is currently working on her Community Service Practicum with the ISE. She earned her B.S. at Southeast Missouri State University of Cape Girardeau, Missouri in 2003. Currently, she is a attending Adler School of Professional Psychology for her Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy. Crystal's tasks for the ISE include assisting with the development of a grant database and calendar.
Jasmin R. Walker, Web Manager
Jasmin earned her B.A.S in Psychology and certification in Child Development from National-Louis University in 2005. She is a first year student at the Adler School of Professional Psychology pursuing her Masters in Counseling. Jasmin's task for the ISE include; design, development and maintenance of the ISE and ISE course website.
