ISE Conference Keynote Speakers


Karen Fulbright-Anderson, Ph.D. discussed her recent work on "Structural Racism and Community Building."

Dr. Fulbright-Anderson is a policy expert whose work focuses on developing, synthesizing, and distilling knowledge about community change efforts.  She is currently a co-director of the Roundtable on Community Change of the Aspen Institute, where she directs a number of Roundtable projects on topics such as evaluation, structural racism, youth development, and public and private sector engagement in community change. She also serves as the chair of Policy Programs for the Aspen Institute. Previously, she was director of research for the Vera Institute of Justice. Dr. Fulbright-Anderson has extensive experience in the philanthropic sector, having worked at the Ford Foundation and the Commonwealth Fund where she developed funding strategies to improve outcomes for young people in high-poverty communities. She has also been a faculty member at the New School for Social Research and a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is currently on the board of trustees for the Institute for Community Peace and YouthBuild USA, and a member of the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Youth Board, the DYCD Workforce Investment Board Youth Council, and the MIT School of Architecture and Planning Visiting Committee. Her other recent work include "Community Change: Theories, Practice, and Evidence" and "New Approaches to Evaluating Community Initiatives, Vol. 2: Theory, Measurement". Dr. Fulbright-Anderson has a B.A. from Wellesley College, and an M.C.P. (Master's in City Planning) and Ph.D. (Urban and Regional Planning) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Francisco Valdes, J.S.D. discussed his recent work in "LatCrit" studies and gay rights scholarship.

Professor Valdes teaches critical race theory, law and sexuality, law and film, and U.S. constitutional law, at the University of Miami School of Law in Florida. In his numerous law review articles and other professional publications, Professor Valdes has discussed myriad topics related to social exclusion, including human rights, majoritarian morality, critical pedagogy, queering the geographies of identities, and coalition theory. Dr. Valdes is an internationally-known leader in the "LatCrit" movement. He is also co-chair of Latina & Latino Critical Legal Theory, Inc. ("LatCrit, Inc.").  In October 2006, LatCrit, Inc. presented the Twelfth Annual LatCrit Conference entitled "Critical Localities: Epistemic Communities, Rooted Cosmopolitans, New Hegemonies, and Knowledge Processes." Dr. Valdes moderated a workshop at this gathering called "Critical Theory and Praxis in United Nations Proceedings." In the program, attendees considered the best way to use the new designation "Special Consultative Status" that was recently conferred on LatCrit by the United Nations Economic & Social Council. After speaking at the ISE conference in April, Professor Valdes will be one of three program coordinators for the North-South Exchange on Theory, Culture and Law conference entitled "The Global Politics of Food: Sustainability and Subordination" which will be held in Mexico City on May 1-3, 2008. Dr. Valdes earned a B.A. in 1978 from the University of California at Berkeley, a J.D. with honors in 1984 from the University of Florida College of Law, and a J.S.M. in 1991 and a J.S.D. in 1994 from Stanford Law School.
