National Health Services Corp provides opportunity to work in Health Professional Shortage Areas – Deadline for applications is March 30, 2008

It is estimated that approximately fifty million Americans live in communities without access to primary health care. In response, the National Health Services Corps (NHSC) uses loan repayment as a tool to attract qualified clinicians to work in these communities. NHSC clinicians provide primary health services, including psychological services in medically underserved communities. In exchange for a two-year commitment, they receive up to $50,000 of repayment for qualified educational loans and expenses in addition to receiving a salary and benefits from the community sites where they work. The NHSC Loan Repayment Program (LRP) offers early career psychologists and counselors financial freedom, expanded career options, and greater peace of mind.

So how does the program work? The NHSC LRP is a competitive program available to counselors and psychologists in three categories including Health Service Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Licensed Professional Counselors. Applicants must be US citizens or nationals who have completed their training and their clinical requirements and who are licensed. The program looks for applicants who want to remain in the "health professional shortage areas" they served even after their commitment is finished.

For more information, please visit http://nhsc.bhpr.hrsa.gov/applications or contact the office at 800-221-9393.
