Alumni Awards

Each year, the Adler School of Professional Psychology presents two awards to two stellar alumni. If you would like to nominate an alumnus for an award, please email us at alumni@adler.edu. The awards are presented at Homecoming each year.

Outstanding Alumnus Award

This annual distinguished "Outstanding Alumnus Award" is given to one alumnus in recognition of their outstanding community leadership and commitment to social justice in the field of psychology. The recipient must be a graduate of Adler School, demonstrate enthusiasm towards the mission, vision, and supports the School's commitment to diversity.

 


 

2009 Outstanding Alumnus Award

Dr. Bret Moore was awarded the 2009 Outstanding Alumnus Award.  He is a board-certified clinical psychologist and intern in clinical psychopharmacology with Indian Health Service in Poplar, MT.  He is a former Active Duty Captain and Clinical Psychologist with the U.S. Army and served 27 months in Iraq as the Chief of Clinical Operations with the 85th Combat Stress Medical Detachment.

Dr. Moore received his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in 2004; M.S. in Clinical Psychopharmacology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, NJ in 2009; M. A. in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI in 1997; and his B.S. in Psychology from University of Southern Mississippi in 1994. 

Dr. Moore holds various positions within Divisions 18 (Psychologists in Public Service) and 19 (Society for Military Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.  He is the 2007 recipient of the Arthur W. Melton award from Division 19, which recognizes early career achievements in military psychology and in 2008, he was awarded a Presidential Citation from Division 18 for his work as Membership Chair while deployed to Iraq.  He is also an active reviewer for several scientific journals and is on the Editorial Boards for Traumatology and Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal. 

Dr. Moore has coauthored or coedited four books including ""Living and Surviving in Harm's Way: A Psychological Treatment Handbook for Military Personnel"", ""The Veterans and Active Duty Military Psychotherapy Treatment Planner"", ""Wheels Down: A Post-deployment Book for Service Members by Service Members"", and ""Pharmacotherapy for Psychologists: Practical and Collaborative Roles"".  He has also authored or coauthored over two dozen book chapters, journal articles, and book reviews.

The Bill Powers Outstanding Graduate Award in Police Psychology

This prestigious award is presented to one Police Psychology graduate who demonstrates outstanding commitment to the values and the mission of the Adler School of Professional Psychology. The award recipient must demonstrate a strong commitment to community, excellent leadership skills, exemplary academic performance, and a dedication to carrying out Bill's vision to improve the psychological well-being of police officers, their families and Chicago communities.


 

2009 Bill Powers Outstanding Graduate Award in Police Psychology

Miguel Gonzalez is the recipient of the 2009 Bill Powers Outstanding Graduate Award in Police Psychology

Miguel has been a lifelong resident of Chicago and earned a Bachelor's Degree from Chicago State University.  He has worked in law enforcement for over 17 years and has worked for the Chicago State University Police Department and the Chicago Police Department.

He has served honorably in the United States Marine Corps Reserve for 9 years and served during Operation Desert Storm-Desert Shield in 1991. 

As a patrolman, he has worked in several capacities including beat, tactical, school, bicycle and foot patrol capacities.  Currently, as a Chicago Police detective he investigates property-related crimes and has been assigned to the mission team investigating several high-profile cases.  He is trained in criminal interviews & interrogations by the Northeast Counterdrug Training Center and Wicklander-Zulawski & Associates.  He has received specialized terrorist training from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, National Center for BioMedical Research, New Mexico Tech, Academy of Counter Terrorist Education and he has received numerous department awards.

He is active in the Spanish-speaking community of Little Village in Chicago and has worked as a substitute teacher in his spare time at Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez Elementary School.  He is a mentor to several Chicago youths and runs a literature book club for teens in Chicago.
