Historic Civil Rights Activist, Rev. Willie T. Barrow, Receives Adler's First Honorary Doctoral Degree

Rev. Willie T. Barrow

Reverend Willie T. Barrow was the speaker for the 30th Annual Commencement Ceremony of Adler School of Professional Psychology. It was during this ceremony that Rev. Barrow received the first honorary doctoral degree ever presented by Adler School.

Known to many as "The Little Warrior," Rev. Barrow has been involved in civil rights efforts since the 1940s. She has relied on her spirituality, organization, and determination to fight for positive social change. Her career as an activist started in Burton, Texas where she was a student. She gained early success in the civil rights struggle there, when she led a demonstration of rural African American schoolchildren against a segregated school system that refused them bus service because of their race. After this accomplishment, she continued her spiritual and social activism by working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a field organizer during the major marches and demonstrations between 1950 and 1968. Rev. Barrow was responsible for the organization of transportation, shelter, meetings, and rallies for the demonstrators, who came to participate in the marches and sit-ins.

Currently, Rev. Barrow serves as co-chairperson of the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition. She works to provide spiritual guidance and practical assistance to communities in need. At the Coalition, she coordinates the activities of the national organization and serves as an aide to the Reverend Jesse Jackson. It was wonderful to hear from Rev. Barrow at our commencement ceremony on Sunday, October 28, 2007. Click Here to read her inspirational words.
