"I believe in collaborative relationships between
faculty and students." Mayumi Nakamura

Coming to the US from a culturally homogeneous country, I have experienced some very challenging situations. First, I had to adjust to different educational systems and expectations, customs, language, food, religion, environment, and culture. Second, I had to deal with becoming a part of a minority population. Finally, I had to face prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. However, these experiences allowed me the sensitivity to understand that diversity issues cannot be ignored. When I discovered that the Adler School’s mission was very similar to my personal mission, I decided to join Adler to empower those who have been underserved and underrepresented. Outside of the School, I am actively involved with the Asian and International community. As a core faculty member, I seek to carry out our mission by providing research consulting for the Japanese American Service Committee and the Asian American Institute.

In teaching, I strongly believe in collaborative relationships between faculty and students. Creating an optimal environment for each student is crucial to his or her motivation, critical thinking, and self-reflection. Understanding each student’s readiness and unique background also helps me provide them with the individualized tools they need—beyond the textbook—to fully develop.
