  • Workshop: Overview of Traumatic Brain Injury Within a Military Context (+)

    Thresholds and the Adler School present this day-long workshop on traumatic brain injury with a focus on providing better services for military service members, veterans, and their families. The full-day training starts with an overview of military culture and description of IEDs. Information will be provided on the basics of TBI, screening and assessment, support needed for individuals in a variety of life domains, and current clinical best practices in working with individuals who experience TBI.

    • 6 CEU’s for Illinois Licensed Clinicians provided by Thresholds
    • 6 CEU’s for IAODAPCA (pending approval) provided by Illinois Certification Board
    • The workshop is free (including lunch and CEUs), but space is limited.

  • The Post-DOMA LGBTQ Immigration Landscape: Challenges & Opportunities for Mental Health Professionals (+)

    The Adler School of Professional Psychology and the LGBTQ Immigrant Rights Coalition of Chicago proudly present a panel discussion of the impact the recent Supreme Court ruling on DOMA has had on the LGBTQ immigrant community.

    The panel will also examine the role of the social worker and the mental health professional in the immigration process. Moderated by attorney Roberto M. Romero-Perez, co-chair of the LGBT Rights Committee of the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois (HLAI), and Kim Hunt, Executive Director of Affinity Community Services (Affinity), the panel will feature:

    • Immigration attorneys Andres Cerritos, Solomon Myers and Vanessa Esparza-Lopez
    • Clinical social worker Angela M. Fadragas, a psychotherapist specializing in adult trauma and immigration issues
    • Clinical/community psychologist Elena Quintana, Ph.D., Executive Director, the Adler School Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice

    Two hours of Continuing Legal Education and Continuing Education Units credits will be granted to attorneys and social work professionals (pending approval).

    The Elina Manghi Memorial Child and Adolescent Psychology Lecture and Scholarship Reception.Featured topic and lecture is "Treating a Moody Child: Psychoeducational Psychotherapy A Starting Point Model for Child/Family Therapy” presented by Mary A. Fristad, Ph.D., ABPP.

    Dr. Fristad’ s area of specialty is childhood mood disorders. Author of Raising a Moody Child: How to Cope with Depression, she has also published over 150 articles and book chapters addressing the assessment and treatment of childhood-onset depression, suicidality and bipolar disorder (manic-depression). Dr. Fristad serves on the Board of Directors for five web-based education and support groups for children and families with mood disorders.

    The annual Elina Manghi Memorial Lecture promotes the vision and passion of Elina Manghi, Psy.D,. A Professor in the Adler School Department of Clinical Psychology who led the Child and Adolescent Track of the Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) Program., Dr. Manghian exemplary clinician, researcher and teacher, whose compassion and generosity deeply touched everyone with whom she worked.

    Established in 2012, the Elina Manghi Memorial also provides an annual Diversity Scholarship to support students from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds studying Child and Adolescent Psychology at the Adler School.
