    In this workshop presentation, the encouragement model of child-guidance is presented as an alternative to the praise and coercion strategies that are often relied upon in child-guidance. The basic philosophy of the model is described with strategies for use. Exercises are also offered to help participants make the distinction between the different approaches.

    This two-day interactive workshop is designed for new and experienced parent educators to gain the information and skills to become Certified Positive Discipline Parenting Educators.

     

    The workshop provides effective tools and resources for therapists who want to offer Positive Discipline parenting classes for their clients and/or use Adlerian based concepts and strategies in their sessions. It supports school personnel, nurses, counselors, youth workers and others who deal with parents, children and young people; and it provides insight and strategies for parents with children of all ages who want to learn to parent effectively for today’s world. 

     

    Participants will learn to facilitate experiential activities in group and individual settings. They will learn research-based, effective tools and techniques for teaching parents how to build respectful relationships and use discipline that is kind and firm at the same time, neither punitive nor permissive.  They will gain a set of resource materials adaptable for use with all ages and focus groups; therapeutic relationships; parenting and mentor programs.

    In this presentation, Dr. Rasmussen will discuss the task of child-guidance, which is to prepare the next generation of adults, relative to the challenges and the obstacles. Parents and other care providers often focus on the challenges, which include getting children to clean up after themselves, do homework, listen, etc. and forget that how they respond to the challenges impacts the task. Also discussed are the obstacles to child-care, which include meeting other life priorities that are not directly related to child care. Free of charge.

    In this ACGC sponsored event, Dr. Paul Rasmussen of the Psy.D. program at the Adler School will talk about the three critical dimensions of parent education and child guidance. Parents and other child-care providers frequently get caught up in the meeting the immediate challenges of parenting and childcare, or are overwhelmed by the obstacles, and do not keep in mind the task of parenting.  Dr. Rasmussen with discuss the differences and the importance of parent education and child guidance.


    Parents, teachers, parent educators, family counselors, psychology students, and all individuals wanting to learn more about building and maintaining effective relationships among parents and children will benefit from this event.


    Dr. Rasmussen is the Director of the Adler Child-Guidance Center and member of the Psy.D. faculty. He has been working with individuals and families for over 25 years. 2 CEU hours offered ($20.00 processing fee).
