  • Taoist Tai Chi: An Introductory Class (+)

    Offered by the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada – Pacific Region, Taoist Tai Chi is a great way to reduce stress, increase strength and flexibility and improve circulation, balance and posture.

    The Taoist Tai Chi Society is a volunteer run, registered charitable organization that offers instruction in Taoist Tai Chi™ internal arts, which includes a 108-move Tai Chi set and other related internal arts.

    Taoist Tai Chi™ internal arts are specifically aimed at cultivating health and vitality and were developed by Master Moy Lin-shin, a Taoist monk. Master Moy synthesized the wisdom he learned during more than 50 years of training in meditation, qigong, Tai Chi and other arts into the practices taught by the Society and its sister organizations.

    Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi was founded in Toronto in 1970, with the first classes in British Columbia taking place in 1976. In the Pacific Region, they have now grown to include communities across the province, including the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and many parts of the interior.

    The Institute on Social Exclusion (ISE) is collaborating with Northwestern University School of Medicine, Project Cure, and the Chicago Global Health Alliance toward building a partnership with mental and physical health providers in Liberia, West Africa.

    Our mental health and medical team will be part of a select group of academic/clinical professionals that are building capacity within Liberia, which will ensure the sustainability of their physical and mental health care system. Our efforts are timely as Liberia is one of the African countries that is dealing with the Ebola outbreak, as this has exposed the gaps in the current health care system. The ISE is leading the mental health assessment phase of the project, and we are using this to inform development of a global framework for population mental health.

    Come enjoy a cocktail, art from nationally recognized and local artists, music and great company. There will be a silent auction, a live auction, and raffle to benefit our work in Liberia.     Learn more about the work of the Institute on Social Exclusion (ISE) and the Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice (IPSSJ) through an event featuring a meet and greet, group learning exercise, discussion, and refreshments.

    The Institute on Social Exclusion will discuss the Mental Health Impact Assessment (MHIA), Health Impact Assessment (HIA), and the impact on health policies. The Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice will discuss youth criminalization, mapping of justice expenditures, trauma and the root, and hubs and restorative justice as community solutions.

    The ISE will conduct an HIA mapping exercise, which will precede a discussion by IPSSJ on programs and practices that can be changed.

  • Rudolf Dreikurs’ Legacy for the Adler School: Presented by Dr. Eva Dreikurs Ferguson (+)

    Rudolf Dreikurs founded the Alfred Adler Institute (soon to be Adler University) with the conviction that the health of the individual and the community are intertwined. Dr. Eva Dreikurs Ferguson, the daughter of Rudolf Dreikurs, will highlight the basics of Adlerian Psychology as taught by Rudolf Dreikurs.

    Regardless of one’s orientation, when faculty have a full understanding of the foundational principles and methods on which the school was founded, the heritage of the school will be assured. Moreover, understanding of Adler-Dreikurs psychology enables faculty members to compare and contrast Adler-Dreikurs theory and methods with one’s own psychological views.

    Every person in attendance will receive a copy of Adlerian Theory: An Introduction written by Dr. Eva Dreikurs Ferguson, which highlights the foundations of Adlerian Psychology.

    Dr. Dreikurs Ferguson earned her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. She is a professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a Visiting Scholar at University of California Berkeley. Dr. Dreikurs Ferguson wrote two motivation textbooks. The latest is a 2000
    book called Motivation and published by Oxford University Press. She wrote a book Discipline Without Tears (Dreikurs, Cassel, & Ferguson), Wiley, 2004, and Adlerian Theory, published by the Adler School (latest date is 2014). Dr. Dreikurs Ferguson also has published articles in motivation, cognition, culture, and Adlerian Psychology.

    She is a Life Member of AAAS, a Fellow of APA, a Founding Fellow of APS, a member of the Psychonomic Society and of Sigma Xi. Finally Dr. Dreikurs Ferguson is Chair of ICASSI (the International Committee of Adlerian Summer Schools and Institutes) and Honorary President of IAIP (International Association of Individual Psychology).

  • Soul Repair: Recovering From Moral Injury After War (+)

    Presented by the Adler School of Professional Psychology, ChildServ, Children’s Home Aid, Military Outreach U.S.A., and the Elgin District NIC of the United Methodist Church.

    The event will cover the basics of military culture and the top issues affecting military and veteran inidividuals and families.  The training will culminate with a keynote address by Dr. Rita Nakashima Brock on moral injury.  "Soul Repair: Recovering From Moral Injury After War," is the first book to explore the idea and effect of moral injury on veterans, their families, and their communities.

    Learn how your faith community can better serve your military and veteran families, as they recover from more than a decade at war. The event is free and open to the public. CEUs are available.     Academic Affairs is hosting a continuing education workshop on ethics in the digital age. Those attending the event on site, will receive 2 CEUs. This event can also be accessed online.

    The workshop presenter is Susan Zoline, Ph.D., a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who has been practicing, teaching and consulting in the Chicago area for over thirty years. Dr. Zoline is Associate Professor of Psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Chicago.

    Rapid changes in technology and the emergence of social media as a means of communication have raised new challenges for mental health clinicians. This seminar will address ethical guidelines for thoughtful and effective use of technology in clinical practice, hopefully leading to enhanced connection with clients and reduced liability. Topics to be covered include ways in which technology may enhance or detract from the work of psychotherapy, implications for the therapeutic relationship, boundary considerations in the use of technology, privacy and confidentiality concerns of both client and therapist, risk management considerations and implications of technology for the education and training of future mental health professionals. Didactic presentation, case review and group discussion will be utilized.

  • Adler International Learning Exchange: Concurrent Disorders: Barriers at the intersection of care and social context Session 3 (+)

    Please join us for an Annual Learning Exchange between the Adler Vancouver and Chicago Campuses. This is a three part series in which we will explore the barriers to care for those that experience concurrent disorders. Many individuals struggle with Mental Illness(es) and other social stressors such as homelessness, substance abuse, and other co-occurring health problems; which creates a diminished quality of life for affected individuals. This International Learning Exchange will allow us all to explore more about current treatment trends, social contexts that impact individuals living with concurrent disorders and to develop ideas about how to implement new strategies to reduce barriers to care.

    Third Session:

    CSP students that have been placed at sites where they are learning to work with individuals with concurrent disorders will have the opportunity to share their learning experiences at the Community Engagement Symposium. This Student Learning Exchange will be broadcast to both the Vancouver and Chicago campuses.

  • Social Exclusion Simulation (+)

    The Social Exclusion Simulation is a group experiential learning tool for increasing understanding of complex systems and how the structural barriers that comprise them work to block access to key rights, resources and opportunities for some members of society, rendering them “socially excluded.”

    2.5 C.E.U.’s will be offered to psychologists, counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and interested non-psychologists. Please indicate this on your reservation request.

    Participants include students, faculty and staff of the Adler School, members of the greater Chicagoland community, anyone interested in learning more about social exclusion. Participants adopt authentic Chicago-based case histories of formerly incarcerated women and are tasked with re-entering society – finding a place to live, a job, healthcare and other necessities – in the face of structural and systemic barriers.

    Participant outcomes include:

    • An increased understanding of what structural and systemic barriers are and how they work to undermine opportunity and access.
    • Increased appreciation of practical limits of personal responsibility, agency, and choice.
    • Increased motivation to adopt attitudinal and behavioral changes in pursuit of social change.
    • Increased empathy for other marginalized groups.
    • Apprehend the shock and disappointment about roadblocks of re-entry.
