    This workshop presents an alternative approach to work with 'trauma', from a decolonizing anti-oppression stance, which focuses on the resistance of victims of violence and oppression, as opposed to attending primarily to the details of the trauma, which can be re-traumatizing for both the client and therapist. The workshop will include lecture and experiential work. This workshop is open to all Adler students, faculty, and alumni, as well as professional counsellors (presuming space is available). At the end of the workshop you will be issued a certificate of completion (this workshop is not for credit). The tuition for the two-day workshop is $410.

  • Common Hour: Get Noticed! Writing effective cover letters and resumes (+)

    Alumnus John Rosenfield, M.A. '11, will discuss how to craft compelling and effective resumes and cover letters.

    Jon Rosenfield, M.A. '11, is a Career Counselor at Loyola University Chicago. In his role as the Career Development Center's liaison to the social science departments within the College of Arts and Sciences, he not only works with students to discern and explore majors and career paths of interest, but also to advise students in the process of a job or internship search, informational interviewing, networking, etc. In addition, Jon teaches a section of the Adler School’s Career and Life Planning Seminar, as well as cultivate partnerships with faculty in the departments he serves, and employers/internship coordinators in the community.

  • Social Exclusion Simulation (+)

    The Social Exclusion Simulation is a group experiential learning tool for increasing understanding of complex systems and how the structural barriers that comprise them work to block access to key rights, resources and opportunities for some members of society, rendering them “socially excluded.”

    2.5 C.E.U.’s will be offered to psychologists, counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and interested non-psychologists. Please indicate this on your reservation request.

    Participants include students, faculty and staff of the Adler School, members of the greater Chicagoland community, anyone interested in learning more about social exclusion. Participants adopt authentic Chicago-based case histories of formerly incarcerated women and are tasked with re-entering society – finding a place to live, a job, healthcare and other necessities – in the face of structural and systemic barriers.

    Participant outcomes include:

    • An increased understanding of what structural and systemic barriers are and how they work to undermine opportunity and access.
    • Increased appreciation of practical limits of personal responsibility, agency, and choice.
    • Increased motivation to adopt attitudinal and behavioral changes in pursuit of social change.
    • Increased empathy for other marginalized groups.
    • Apprehend the shock and disappointment about roadblocks of re-entry.

  • The 2014 Annual Elina Manghi Memorial Child and Adolescent Psychology Lecture (+)

    We are pleased to announce that distinguished researcher Sydney Hans, Ph.D., Samuel Deutsch Professor at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, will speak as our 2014 Manghi Memorial Lecturer.

    Dr. Hans will speak on the Chicago Doula Project. In 2000, she established the project for community doulas to work with expecting mothers and their families. Today, it is nationally recognized for its powerful impact supporting healthy families and preventing child maltreatment.

    Dr. Hans is distinguished for her research on how biological and social factors interact and contribute to risk and resilience in human development. Meet Dr. Hans and join us as she discusses the Doula Project and its profound implications for strength-based intervention and policies that benefit infants, young children, and their families.

  • Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way (+)

    This is a two-day training workshop to become certified in Positive Discipline Training, which is based on Adlerian based concepts and strategies. The workshop is offered in collaboration with Positive Discipline Association and the Center for Adlerian Research and Practice.

    For current Adler students the fee is $250. There are also special rates for groups. The early bird rates are vaild through Oct. 6. For more information and to register, click here.

    This two-day workshop is designed for new and experienced parent educators to gain the information and skills to become Certified Positive Discipline Parenting Educators. The workshop provides effective tools and resources for therapists who want to offer Positive Discipline parenting classes for their clients and/or use Adlerian based concepts and strategies in their sessions. It supports school personnel, nurses, counselors, youth workers and others who deal with parents, children and young people; and it provides insight and strategies for parents with children of all ages who want to learn to parent effectively for today’s world. Participants will learn to facilitate experiential activities in group and individual settings. They will learn research-based, effective tools and techniques for teaching parents how to build respectful relationships and use discipline that is kind and firm at the same time, neither punitive nor permissive. They will gain a set of resource materials adaptable for use with all age and focus groups; therapeutic relationships; parenting and mentor programs. Participants leave with the certification, Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator.

    Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way (developed by Lynn Lott and Jane Nelsen) provides a step-by-step approach to starting and leading experientially based parenting groups. This program stands alone or offers significant enhancement to any program; it emphasizes experiential activities that reach the heart to inspire deeper understanding and change. Parents love the Parents Helping Parents Problem-Solving Steps because this process provides a fun and effective way for them to get specific help with real problems.
