History

The mission of the Center for Adlerian Practice and Scholarship is to maintain, promote and grow the core theory, research, and methods of Adlerian Psychology, its foundational roots, and best practice applications in schools, at home, in clinical settings, the workplace and in the community. Adler University has a rich history of engaging a range of stakeholders in using Adlerian philosophy to improve the quality of lives of individuals and to work within communities to provide tools and approaches to effectively apply Adlerian methods particularly in parenting and within the school classrooms.

As the University expanded its programs, one strength was to allow a diversity of philosophical orientations at the University. This meant that not all faculty and students were identified Adlerians. Administration at the University was committed to ensure that the foundational roots and the legacy that Dr. Rudolf Dreikurs established at the school was maintained.

Adler Child Guidance Center (ACGC)

In 2012, the Adler Child Guidance Center (ACGC) was established with a particular focus within communities on parent and teacher training. The Center formalized work at the University that had been focused in this area for many years. ACGC helped place hundreds of students in a range of community agencies and schools to lead Adlerian parent training classes. These students not only gained substantial experience in these organizations, but they learned a methodology they could use in their own practices after graduating and gaining licensure. The community agencies also gained through having Adlerian philosophy infused into their work with clients. Through the parenting groups, teachers and school administrators also learned more about Adlerian approaches that could be used in the classroom as well.

Within a few years, it became clear that the goal was broader than parent and teacher training. Administration at Adler University made a commitment to ensure Dreikurs’ legacy and the foundational roots by expanding the focus of the Adler Child Guidance Clinic to its current mission and to establishing the Center for Adlerian Practice and Scholarship.
