Adler School Named to 2010 President’s Higher Ed Community Service Honor Roll05.12.11
The Corporation for National and Community Service today announced the Adler School of Professional Psychology has earned a coveted spot on the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Honor Roll is the highest acknowledgment an institute of higher learning can receive from the federal government in recognition of its dedication to service learning, volunteerism, and community engagement. Among the community engagement initiatives for which the Adler School has been recognized are:
- Adler School students’ internship work as counselors and mentors for an “in-school suspension” alternative program with the Chicago Teachers’ Center, an organization dedicated to bringing educational opportunities to low-income and underrepresented students and families
- Students studying abroad in Costa Rica who provided approximately 500 hours of non-clinical volunteer service in orphanages, homes for the elderly, and homes for people living with HIV—while documenting the experience through while journaling and photography
“This award reflects the dedication and hard work of our students, faculty, and staff working with our 500 partner organizations in communities across Chicagoland,” said Raymond E. Crossman, Ph.D., president of the Adler School of Professional Psychology.
The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency dedicated to promoting and practicing community service and volunteerism throughout the country. The Honor Roll was created in 2006 to publicly acknowledge colleges and universities that show a commitment to service learning and community engagement. The distinction identifies institutions dedicated to promoting the values of community service and engaging in relevant projects on campus, within the local community, and throughout the nation.
Adler School of Professional Psychology has provided quality education through a scholar/practitioner model for more than 50 years. Its mission is to continue the pioneering work of Alfred Adler by graduating socially responsible practitioners, engaging communities, and advancing social justice. The Adler School has 11 graduate-level programs enrolling more than 1,000 students at its campuses in Chicago and Vancouver, British Columbia.
