The Chicago Community Trust has awarded Adler University's Institute on Social Exclusion a $50,000 grant to continue its Health Impact Assessment, focused on recommended land use for decommissioned coal power plant sites in Chicago’s Pilsen and Little Village communities.

Examining potential mental and physical health implications in partnership with community leaders, partner organizations, and residents, the study will provide community-informed recommendations on land use—which will affect community health for years to come.

“This generous grant enables the Insitute on Social Exclusion to continue partnering with organizations in Pilsen to monitor how open space redevelopment impacts physical and mental health,” said Tiffany McDowell, Ph.D., ISE Co-Executive Director.

Health impact assessment (HIA) is a tool to help communities determine how proposed policies, laws, and other projects will affect the health of their residents. Results and recommendations from the assessment can influence how a proposed project should move forward to improve community mental health.

The Institute on Social Exclusion pioneered the United States’ first Mental Health Impact Assessment, which examined federal policy guidance on arrest records and hiring and that policy's impact on the mental health of residents of Chicago’s Englewood community.
