Illinois Campus Compact Awards AmeriCorps Grant to Adler School09.02.11
The Adler School of Professional Psychology is among 13 institutions that have been awarded grants from Illinois Campus Compact (ILCC) enabling students to participate in the compact’s Students in Service (SIS) program.
The Students in Service program supports the recruitment of college students to volunteer in a range of communities to help increase the capacity of local nonprofit agencies and schools to address the critical needs in these communities. In return, college students earn a modest education award to help offset their education expenses.
Through the ILCC grant, five Adler School students will be able to earn an AmeriCorps educational award of $1,175 each upon successfully completing 300 service hours through the program. Cecil Thomas, Associate Director of Community Engagement at the Adler School, will serve as SIS campus coordinator for the participating Adler School students.
“It’s an honor to be part this program through Illinois Campus Compact,” Thomas said. “Not only does the Students in Service program complement our Community Service Practicum here at the Adler School, but it also strengthens our values as an institution by giving students the opportunity to dig further into their service experience to explore the importance of what it means to be a socially responsible practitioner.”
More than 3,700 college students will participate nationally in SIS, contributing approximately 1.4 million hours of service to their local communities. “The Students in Service program has proven to be incredibly valuable to communities,” said Jennifer Dorr, executive director of Washington Campus Compact, which awarded the Illinois Campus Compact (ILCC) 100 part-time AmeriCorps slots that include the five granted to the Adler School.
“The education award helps students financially to stay in college while gaining valuable workforce and civic skills through their service experience.”
