The Adler School's Rehabilitation Counseling Program Receives First Accreditation of Its Kind
09.03.11

The Adler School of Professional Psychology’s master of arts program in Counseling Psychology, Specialization in Rehabilitation Counseling has been named the first program in a professional school of psychology to receive accreditation by CORE – The Council on Rehabilitation Education.

The Adler School specialization in rehabilitation counseling, established in 2009, received CORE’s accreditation in part because it infuses courses with three elements that CORE considers integral to rehabilitation counselor education: ethical behavior, diversity or individual differences, and critical thinking.

The program also exceeds CORE standards for internship and practicum experience by requiring students to complete 200 hours of Community Service Practicum—a curricular hallmark at the Adler School recognized as an “Innovative Practice in Graduate Education” by the American Psychology Association Board of Educational Affairs.

“This accreditation validates our work preparing socially responsible practitioners and assures students that they are receiving a quality education within the field of rehabilitation counseling,” said Christine Bard, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Program Director.

Accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental process of self-study and external review intended to evaluate, enhance and publicly recognize quality in institutions and in programs of higher education. Following an accreditation process that took more than a year to complete, the Adler School program was awarded candidacy for accreditation in July.

"The CORE accreditation process is a rigorous review of our educational standards and practices,” said Martha Casazza, Ed.D., Adler School Vice President of Academic Affairs. “Receiving this accreditation, and becoming the first professional school of psychology to achieve it, is a credit to our faculty who developed our forward-thinking program, and it recognizes the outstanding preparation we are providing future practitioners in rehabilitation counseling."

The Adler School’s M.A. in Counseling Psychology, Specialization in Rehabilitation Counseling program focuses on preparing students for the profession of rehabilitation counseling with special emphasis on providing services that enhance the independence and quality of life for persons with disabilities. For more information on the program and admission requirements, visit www.adler.edu.
