The Adler School Named a 2012 Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs
09.12.11

The Adler School of Professional Psychology has been awarded the Military Friendly School designation of G.I. Jobs, a leading magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. The magazine’s 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students.

The 2012 list of Military Friendly Schools® was compiled through extensive research and a data driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country.

The Adler School maintains a long record of active involvement with and for its students who are active military personnel, veterans and civilians that support the military.

  • This fall, the School welcomed its first class of students—veterans, active military and civilians—pursuing degrees in the school’s new doctor of psychology track in military clinical psychology, the first such program outside the U.S. government’s military medical school. The track includes courses focused on aspects of military psychology that have been taught at the Adler School for several years.
  • In 2010, Adler School students were awarded more than 30 percent of the U.S. Army’s F. Edward Herbert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarships available nationwide. During the 2010 internship match process, an Adler School student was selected for the U.S. Air Force Psychology Internship Program and was commissioned as a Captain (0-3) in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps
  • Adler School students have been involved since 2009 in the School’s student organization for military psychology advised by faculty member Joseph E. Troiani, Ph.D., C.A.D.C., a recently retired Navy commander.
  • Faculty members also have been highly involved. By invitation of the U.S. Army Medical Command, Adler School faculty members have participated in the All Corps Educator Tour of Fort Sam Houston, Texas; by invitation of the U.S. Navy Clinical Psychology Program, faculty have taken part in the Educators Medical VIP Visit to the Naval Medical Center San Diego.
  • The Adler School also is an active participant in the Yellow Ribbon G.I. Education Enhancement Program, a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008.

In compiling its 2012 list, G.I. Jobs also incorporated a survey of student veterans for the first time. The feedback provides prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience at a given institution based on peer reviews from current students. Student veteran survey feedback can be viewed at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/2012 list. Service members and veterans can also virtually meet student veterans from schools on the site to learn more about personal school decisions and the transition from the military to an academic environment.

The colleges, universities and trade schools on the 2012 list prioritize the recruitment of students with military experience, through scholarships and discounts, veterans’ clubs, full-time staff, military credit and other services to those who served.

A full story and detailed list of Military Friendly Schools® will be highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools and a poster, both of which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October. The newly redesigned website www.militaryfriendlyschools.com features the list, interactive tools and search functionality to assist military veterans with their school decisions.
