Addiction Professional Interviews Dr. Bathje on Harm Reduction Approaches to Addiction Treatment

In its February issue, Addiction Professional took a look at emerging trends in counselor education. Speaking with Geoff Bathje, Ph.D., they explored Adler's new emphasis on harm reduction—an approach to addiction treatment made more possible by the declining war on drugs.

"The idea of harm reduction counseling as a model is still early in its development,” says Dr. Bathje. “It fits well with Motivational Interviewing, which is about meeting clients where they're at.” He adds, “The definition of harm reduction that I really like is 'any positive change. Therefore, if an individual who enters treatment with poly-substance issues is able to eliminate use of one substance at the outset, that is harm reduction,"

Dr. Bathje is a professor in Adler University's counseling program.
