“Things probably should have turned out differently for Samantha Schilling. The stories she tells have dark beginnings and could have had, under different circumstances, dark endings -- as so many stories for those in the military do.”

In this feature on military veterans who become mental health professionals to help other military personnel and veterans , CNN.com interviewed Schilling about the experiences that led her to pursue her degrees in counseling and clinical psychology at the Adler School.  "I'm determined to be able to be helpful to others," says Schilling, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1999 to 2003  "Helping others helps me.”

In a military culture built on camaraderie, the desire to help a fellow veteran is natural and powerful, the Adler School’s Joseph Troiani, Ph.D. says in the story. Dr. Troiani is associate professor and coordinator of the Adler School’s Psy.D. track in military clinical psychology, and a retired Navy commander.

The story also quotes Adler School alumnus Bret A. Moore, Psy.D., ABBP, a former active-duty Army psychologist who completed two tours in Iraq and is a nationally recognized author on military psychology.
