Longer life spans have created a new need for trained professionals who can work with older adults to enhance their lives and maximize their potential. In the Master of Arts in Gerontological Counseling program, you’ll explore the impact of psychological, biological, and sociocultural factors on the aging process. Coursework and practicum training will prepare you to counsel older adults and their families or assume a leadership role in relevant human services agencies.

Admission Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree earned from a college or university regionally accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or an equivalent degree from an international college or university
  • A grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for undergraduate and graduate coursework
  • Completion of the following semester courses in psychology with grades of "C" or better: General or introductory psychology, abnormal psychology, and research methods pr statistics. Equivalent coursework in other social sciences may also be considered.
  • Approved applicants will be invited for an interview as the final step in the admissions process 

Degree Requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of all required credit hours, including all required courses
  • Satisfactory completion of 200 minimum clock hours of community service practicum
  • Satisfactory completion of 700 minimum clock hours of clinical practicum
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and no more than two grades or six credit hours of "C"
  • Successful completion of the Master's Clinical Qualifying Examination
  • Completion of application for graduation and full payment of any outstanding tuition or fees
  • Faculty approval for graduation and recommendation to the Board of Trustees for the conferral of the Master of Arts in Gerontological Counseling

Licensure

Upon completion of the Master of Arts in Gerontological Counseling program, you’ll be able to sit for the Licensed Professional Counselor examination in Illinois. With additional supervised experience, you’ll be able to sit for the Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors examination in Illinois. For students planning to work in another state, the school suggests that you inquire about licensing requirements specific to that particular state.
