Signing a Lease or Rental Agreement
- Carefully read through the terms and conditions on the lease before signing
- If this is your first time renting, the owner or agency may ask about your job or financial status. In some instances a co-signer may be required.
- Lease agreements can be for any amount of time. However, the norm is one year.
- Always have a copy of your rental agreement.
- Policies vary from owner to owner, but you may be asked for a safety deposit, a pet deposit (if you have one) and first and last month's rent.
- Be sure to ask about your security deposit and what it covers. Also, owners and agencies are required to hold your deposit in a bank account and must report to you the yearly interest.
- Rent is typically due on the first of every month. Owner and agencies are required to wait until 5 days after the date the rental money is due before cashing a check or money order.
