Applying for Financial Aid

Overview

Students initiate the application process by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. A report is generated based on a student's FAFSA which is sent to the school. The Office of Financial Aid uses this report to produce an award letter for the student, which details the student's Direct Loan and Federal Work Study award for the whole academic year (fall through summer terms). Approximately three weeks after the student files the FAFSA, the school produces and mails the award letter to the student, along with other forms that must be completed for the student to accept their award for the year. When the student returns all of the required materials, the school certifies the student's loans.

If a student needs more financial aid than is provided in the award letter, the student has the option to apply for a Direct Graduate PLUS (federal) or an Alternative (private) loan.

Application Process – Direct Loans for 2010-2011 Academic Year

Click Here for Information about Direct Loans.

Step 1: File your 2009 Federal Tax Return

If you are unsure of your filing requirements please refer to the IRS Publication #501 "Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information" for more detailed information:
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p501.pdf {See page 3 for a helpful eligibility chart.}

Step 2: File the 2010-2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

All students who wish to receive any form of U.S. federal financial aid (Direct Loans, Direct Graduate PLUS Loans, and Federal Work Study) must initiate the process by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Log on to the FAFSA web site using your Department of Education PIN. (To request your PIN, go to www.pin.ed.gov).

To complete the FAFSA online you will need:

  • Social Security Number and Driver's License Number
  • W-2 Forms or any other records of earned income
  • Federal Income Tax Return for the previous year
  • Records of other untaxed income received such as welfare, Social Security, veteran's benefits, AFDC, TANF, ADC, and military or clergy allowances
  • Current bank statements and records of other savings and investments such as stocks,
    bonds, and mutual funds
  • Non U.S. Citizens will need their permanent resident card

Please note:

  • The Adler School's federal school code is G20681.
  • All graduate students must file as "independent" regardless of the dependency status listed on their federal tax return.
  • All housing is "off campus."
  • Parents' tax information should not be included.

We recommend that you retain a copy of the FAFSA completion confirmation email for future follow up.

NEED HELP WITH YOUR FAFSA? Click on the "NEED HELP?" button located at the bottom of every FAFSA page. You can also get one-on-one help from a customer service representative by clicking on "Live Help" at the top of the FAFSA page or by calling 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243).

The priority FAFSA completion deadline for returning students is June 15th, 2010.

If you do not meet the completion deadline this will delay processing of your financial aid packet which could result in delays to your funds disbursement for the Fall 2010 term.

Step 3: Confirm Mailing Address

The Office of Financial Aid will mail 2010-2011 financial aid packets to students' address on record. Please check WebAdvisor to make sure the address we have for you is correct. You can contact the Registrar at registrar@adler.edu to make changes.

Step 4: Update your Student Aid Report (SAR)

Once your FAFSA is submitted, the Department of Education will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR) for your review. If your SAR shows that you have missing or incorrect information, make changes as soon as possible to ensure timely processing.

Log back into the FAFSA site at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov

Request a duplicate PIN at http://www.pin.ed.gov

Your completed FAFSA will be sent to us and we will produce an award letter detailing your Direct Loan and Federal Work Study award for the 2010-2011 academic year. We began mailing students' award letters and other application forms in mid-April. You need to complete and return all of the required forms before we can certify your 2010-2011 Direct Loans.

Note: Some students' files will be selected for a process called Verification, either by the Department of Education, or by the school. If your file is verified, you will be required to submit a signed copy of your federal tax return and additional forms before an award letter can be produced for you. This can delay the application process, so we strongly recommend that students complete the FAFSA early.

Application Process – Direct Graduate PLUS Loans

Click Here for information about Graduate PLUS loans.

Direct Graduate PLUS loans are an option for students who need more financial aid after they have already accepted Direct Loans. Follow these directions to apply for a Direct Graduate PLUS Loan:

Step 1: Determine your financial need.

If you need assistance please refer to the COST OF ATTENDANCE WORKSHEET in your financial aid packet or on the Moodle site under the Office of Financial Aid's Forms. Moodle also hosts a Term Budget Calculator which is helpful after the school year has begun to calculate an estimated refund amount, factor in your confirmed work study wages, etc.

If you need help calculating your cost of attendance or to determine if you are eligible to take out additional funds for the term, please contact our office for assistance by email at financialaid@adler.edu or phone (312) 201-5900 x205.

Step 2: Calculate 2.5% for loan fees.

The Total Amount Requested on your form should include 2.5% to cover loan fees. A loan fee rebate of 1.5% is awarded automatically at origination of the Direct Graduate PLUS loan as an incentive for student borrowers to make qualified payments on time. When you are in repayment (6 months after your program completion date or after you've dropped below half-time status) you will be expected to make 12 monthly payments on time.  If you neglect to do so, the rebate amount will be added to your principal balance.

Please refer to the COST OF ATTENDANCE TROUBLESHOOTING sheet if you need assistance calculating the loan fees for your Direct Graduate PLUS loan.

Step 3: Complete an electronic master promissory note (e-MPN)

Complete this step online at www.studentloans.gov. Once you've logged in, select "Complete MPN for Student Loans" and then "Graduate Plus." You will be required to use your FAFSA PIN to complete the eMPN. If you've misplaced your PIN please request a duplicate at www.pin.ed.gov.

Please maintain a copy of your eMPN confirmation email for future follow-up.

Step 4: Submit this completed form to the Office of Financial Aid.

Make sure the information entered on this form matches your e-MPN. Completed forms can be sent via:

  • FAX:  (312) 201-0250 (Please include cover letter to ensure proper delivery)
  • EMAIL: financialaid@adler.edu
  • CAMPUS MAIL BOX:  On the 21ST floor
  • MAIL TO:

Adler School of Professional Psychology
65 E Wacker Pl., Ste 2100
Chicago, IL 60601
ATTN: OFFICE OF FINANCIAL AID

The Office of Financial Aid requires both an e-MPN and completed Application for Additional Financial Aid form before we can begin certification of your Direct Graduate PLUS loan. Incorrect or missing information entered on either form can delay the loan certification process. Please check your Adler School email account on a regular basis for communication about your loan application.

If you are expecting a refund check for living expenses, it will be available approximately 4 to 6 weeks from the date that you have submitted ALL required materials. If you have not seen a refund check within that time frame, please contact Student Accounts Manager, Cynthia Cruz at ccruz@adler.edu or (312) 201-5900 x201.

Application Process – Alternative (Private) Loans

Click Here for information about Alternative (Private) Loans.

Alternative Loans are both an option for students who need more financial aid after they have already accepted Direct Loans and also for students who are not eligible to receive federal student loans (including international students). The Office of Student Accounts requires approximately 4 to 6 weeks for processing Alternative Loan applications.

Follow these directions to apply for an Alternative Loan:

Step 1: Choose a lender for your Alternative Loan.

Step 2: Determine the amount you would like to apply for.

Keep in mind that a refund check cannot exceed the school-determined cost of living, which is $8,860 per term.

Step 3: Apply for the loan online through Great Lakes' website.

The application link is listed on the Alternative Loan Application form.

NOTE: International Students must have a co-signer to apply for Alternative Loans. The co-signer must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with an established credit history.

Step 4: Complete an Alternative Loan Application form and return it to the Office of Financial Aid.

This form is available for download on Moodle:
