From Sri Lanka to Canada: MPPA graduate aims to support nonprofits, communities

Stories | 11.01.24

For Shehana Mirza, her commitment to addressing systemic injustices stems from her experience growing up and working in Sri Lanka.

“Hailing from a country that suffered from a 30-year war, I have met other minority youth like me who have suffered, who live with the effects of war, trauma, and continuous discrimination,” said Mirza, who once served as a program officer for the Centre for Peace Building and Reconciliation in Sri Lanka, which offers peacebuilding and reconciliation programs for young adults in conflict-affected areas.

That experience helped her develop a deep passion for community development, which led her to pursue a career in public policy and the nonprofit sector.

Mirza earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a master’s in human rights from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka. To further her knowledge and skills, she enrolled in Adler University’s Master of Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) program in Vancouver, moving to Canada in January 2022.

Two years later, Mirza completed the program, which helps shape future policymakers, public administrators, and community-based professionals seeking to impact systemic change.

Since completing the program, she found roles as a program coordinator and project assistant for a nonprofit settlement agency in Vancouver. In September, Mirza relocated to Toronto to work for The Bargains Group, which provides essential products, such as clothing and hygiene products, to homeless shelters, charities, and schools.

“This role has allowed me to continue contributing to the nonprofit sector in meaningful ways,” said Mirza, who will return to Vancouver and join fellow graduates during the Vancouver Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at The Orpheum Theatre.

Until then, Mirza is reflecting on her higher education journey that took her from Sri Lanka to Canada, the biggest challenge she faced as an international student, the highlights of her time in the MPPA program, and some advice for current and future students at Adler.

What led you to Adler University to pursue a master’s in public policy and administration?

I found that Adler University was the perfect institution for my aspirations, particularly in the vibrant service landscape in Canada. My background is in community development and the nonprofit sector in Sri Lanka. I was searching for a program that would provide me with a comprehensive understanding of policy issues, especially within the Canadian context. Adler’s MPPA program curriculum is tailored specifically for those pursuing social service or public policy careers. The program stood out as an ideal opportunity to equip myself with the knowledge and skills necessary to visibly impact communities.

What were the highlights during your time in the MPPA program?

There are several highlights from my time at Adler, including the invaluable internships and capstone project. These provided practical, hands-on experience in the nonprofit sector long before graduation. I conducted my internship at the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association – BC Chapter in Vancouver. The organization provided programs and services for hard-of-hearing kids, families, youth, and seniors. These opportunities were instrumental in shaping my current career.

What were some challenges you faced and overcame as an international student?

The most significant challenge I faced was homesickness. As an international student, I’m proud that I tested my resilience and adaptability throughout the program.

What will the commencement ceremony mean to you?

Attending the commencement ceremony this fall will be a special occasion for me. It represents not just the success of my academic journey but also a significant personal achievement as an international student who faced numerous challenges along the way. Reflecting on my journey, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for reaching this milestone.

Do you have any advice for current and future students regarding their higher education journey at Adler?

I encourage everyone to take advantage of the volunteer and networking opportunities available, especially with the organizations that impact the community. These will help you get hands-on experience and help you find future jobs. Another advice for international students in the MPPA program in Vancouver is to take the time to familiarize yourself with Canadian laws and regulations. This will go a long way when working on those policy papers for class and will help you be successful in the long run.
