Adler University will offer its Master of Arts in Counseling: Art Therapy (MACAT) program in a fully online format beginning Fall 2025, expanding access to students across North America. Designed to mirror the long-established Chicago program, the online MACAT delivers the same rigorous curriculum, Adlerian foundation, and clinical training, providing greater flexibility for students to advance their careers without relocating. The MACAT program will also continue being offered in-person in Chicago.
The online format combines asynchronous coursework with live, interactive classes, ensuring a dynamic and engaging learning experience. Students will complete their clinical training in their local communities, with mentorship and supervision from Adler’s expert faculty, ensuring they receive the same high-quality education from the in-person program. With this structure, students gain the real-world experience necessary to become accomplished art therapists, all while enjoying the flexibility of online education.
In addition to developing strong clinical and artistic competencies, graduates are prepared for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P). After two years, alums can receive the full ATR.

Program Director Dr. La Civita
“The introduction of the fully online MACAT program reinforces Adler University’s leadership in flexible, cutting-edge graduate education,” said Program Director Jennifer LaCivita, Psy.D. “Building on the success of our Ph.D. in Art Therapy, which transitioned online in 2024, this program expands opportunities for students, empowering them to pursue advanced education without geographic barriers. Our students will benefit from small class sizes, personalized mentorship, and the unique Adlerian approach that sets our graduates apart in the field.”
What truly distinguishes the MACAT program is its integration of Adlerian psychology — a holistic, strengths-based approach that emphasizes social interest, community engagement, and individual potential. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and recommended by the Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education (ACATE), the program ensures that graduates are fully prepared to meet the highest standards for licensure and practice as professional counselors and registered art therapists.
As the demand for art therapists continues to grow, especially in mental health, trauma-informed-practices, and community settings, this program equips students to meet that need. With its combination of flexible online education and comprehensive clinical training, MACAT graduates will be prepared to make a profound impact in a wide variety of settings, including mental health centers, hospitals, schools, nonprofit organizations, and private practice.
Students may complete the MACAT degree full-time or part-time. Part-time students work with program staff to create individualized course plans based on their availability, and schedules can adjust from semester to semester as needed.
