On-Campus Modality

Through the Master of Arts in Counseling: Specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program on-campus modality, students can complete the program in 2 years on a full-time basis or through a more flexible part-time schedule.

Most classes are offered in a traditional classroom format; however, to meet the needs of students with different life demands, classes are also available in weekend, evening, online and blended (partially online) settings.

Field Training & Placement

Social Justice Practicum (SJP)
Unique to our institution is the Social Justice Practicum, a non-clinical experiential practicum completed by all Adler University students to cultivate the skills for becoming agents of social change. Working with our network of hundreds of community partners, students develop the practical knowledge and understanding of what it means to engage with communities and be a socially responsible practitioner.

With the assistance of the SJP coordinator, students will select their practicum sites from a list of established sites provided by the Center for Civic Learning and Community Action. These sites are throughout the metropolitan Chicago area.

Clinical Practicum and Internship
A critical part of the CMHC program is clinical skill development. The Clinical Training Director will initiate the application and placement process.  Students are given temporal guidelines to complete the process in order to attain sites and start the field training. Students can select established sites around the Chicago area, or develop a new training site with the approval of the Training Director.

Students complete extensive field training, which provides opportunities to apply theory, counseling skills, and formulate treatment strategies with clients in a variety of hospitals, clinics, mental health centers, community organizations, and government agencies. Throughout the fieldwork, students receive close mentorship and clinical supervision by faculty and licensed professionals. This training consists of a minimum 100-hour practicum and 600-hour internship, typically at the same site.
