Clinical Psychology Externships

Psy.D. Externship/Practicum Program Goal

The primary goal of Adler Community Health Services' (ACHS) Assessment, Psychotherapy, & Advanced Externship/Practicum Program is to provide externs the experience and supervision necessary to begin mastering assessment and intervention competencies, preparing them for future levels of training (i.e., assessment, therapy and advanced practicum).

Training Model

The externship program uses the scholar-practitioner model of training, as articulated by the National Council of Schools and Programs in Professional Psychology (NCSPP), as the basis for its training program.

Training Model Goals

The externship has four goals, with attendant objectives and competencies. Achievement of goals is measured in three areas: knowledge; skills; and attitude.

  • GOAL 1: Trainee-level development in relationship competency.
  • GOAL 2: Trainee-level competence in the delivery of clinical services.
    • Objective: Basic to advanced trainee-level knowledge of and skill in psychological assessment/testing
    • Objective: Basic to advanced trainee-level knowledge of and skill in psychotherapy (individual; couple; family; group)
  • GOAL 3: Trainee-level competence in delivering ancillary professional services.
    • Objective: Knowledge of and skill in education/consultation
    • Objective: Foundational knowledge of and skill in research/evaluation
  • GOAL 4: Development of a critical-thinking professional aptitude.
    • Objective: Knowledge of major psychological theoretical orientations
    • Objective: Knowledge of and skill in socially responsible practice
    • Objective: Knowledge of and sensitivity to human diversity issues
    • Objective: Knowledge of ethical and legal standards

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, externs are expected to demonstrate:

  • Competence in therapeutic relationship, assessment, intervention, and consultation/education;
  • Understanding of disciplined inquiry and use of the local clinical scientist model;
  • Understanding of major psychological theoretical orientations and key concepts of Adlerian theory and practice;
  • Understanding of environmental factors that may contribute to overall health;
  • Understanding of the role of diversity;
  • Understanding of the importance of collaboration; and
  • Commitment to the highest standards of professional ethics.
