Weapons on Campus

The Weapons on Campus policy prohibits the storage, use, or possession of firearms, fireworks, explosives, or weapons of any kind on the Adler University campus.

Any reports of unauthorized weapons on campus can be made to campus security located on the 15th floor reception, 1st floor reception, or by emailing security@adler.edu.

Purpose

The presence of weapons on campus presents an unacceptable risk to the health and safety of all members and guests of the Adler University community. Accordingly, the storage, possession, or use of firearms, fireworks, explosives, or weapons of any kind—including replicas or facsimiles—is strictly prohibited anywhere on campus.

Scope

This prohibition applies to all students, employees, independent contractors, and visitors, including individuals who hold a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Definitions

Except as expressly permitted for qualified law enforcement officers, concealed weapons are not permitted on campus pursuant to the Illinois Firearm Concealed Carry Act (430 ILCS 66), effective January 1, 2014.

Under 720 Illinois Compiled Statutes 5/21-6, a weapon is defined as “a handgun, sawed-off shotgun, sawed-off rifle, any other firearm small enough to be concealed upon the person, semiautomatic firearm, or machine gun…any other rifle, shotgun, spring gun, other firearm, stun gun or taser as defined in paragraph (a) of Section 24-1 of this Code, knife with a blade of at least 3 inches in length, dagger, dirk, switchblade knife, stiletto, ax, hatchet, or other deadly or dangerous weapon or instrument of like character…a bludgeon, black-jack, slingshot, sand-bag, sand-club, metal knuckles, billy or other dangerous weapon of like character.”

Propellant sprays intended for personal protection and self-Defence are permitted.

Students who are deputized law enforcement officers and are legally authorized to carry firearms may do so on campus, provided they carry the required law enforcement identification at all times. In such cases, all weapons must remain concealed.
