I strive to create a classroom environment where students feel supported in trying new things, challenging themselves, and sitting with the discomfort that comes with growth. I view teaching as fostering personal understanding through knowledge, exposure to diverse ways of thinking and being, learning to sit with discomfort, and collaborative learning. To achieve this, I draw heavily from systems theory and a feminist, dialogic approach. My role is to facilitate growth by providing knowledge, encouragement, and space for students to explore and deepen their understanding of themselves as clinicians.

OVERVIEW

Libby Ebert, LMFT, CST, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified sex therapist, and adjunct faculty member at Adler University in Chicago, where she teaches in the Certificate in Sex Therapy. Her work spans clinical practice, graduate-level education, and professional training focused on sexuality and relationships.

Ebert practices at Avid Intimacy, a Chicago-based sex therapy practice, where she works with historically underserved and marginalized populations, including LGBTQIA+ and transgender and gender-nonconforming clients, clients who are Black, Indigenous, and people of colour, nonmonogamous partners, and clients who identify as kinky. Her clinical work addresses a range of sexuality and relationship concerns, including differences in sexual desire, sexual trauma, intimacy concerns, sexual dysfunction, and gender exploration.

Her interest in sexuality began during her undergraduate studies, when she completed a thesis titled Coming Undone: A Series of Essays Exploring the Female Orgasm. The project was nominated for a Distinction Award and received a Showcase Presenter Award. Early in her career, she also worked at a nonprofit organization supporting women living with HIV, an experience that deepened her understanding of the intersections of sexuality, health, race, and gender.

Ebert has contributed to sex therapy education at Adler as a teaching assistant, guest lecturer, and adjunct faculty member. She has also served as a guest lecturer at Northwestern University. Her teaching has addressed topics including sexuality across the lifespan, working with kinky clients and erotically marginalized populations, and assessment and diagnosis in sex therapy.

In addition to her teaching, Ebert develops and delivers professional training on topics including desire in long-term relationships, sexual trauma, lesbian relationships, and sexuality among Latine women. She has presented at conferences, universities, private trainings, and professional organizations, including Texas A&M University, The Chicago School, Northeastern Illinois University, and the Illinois Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Ebert’s approach is grounded in systems theory, intersectional feminism, trauma-informed practice, and culturally responsive sex therapy. Through her teaching and clinical work, she seeks to help emerging therapists develop the clinical skills, cultural humility, and confidence to thoughtfully support people with diverse sexual, gender, and relational experiences.
