OVERVIEW
Dr. Gibbs is an assistant professor and the current Social Justice Practicum faculty chair and online program manager. Previously, he led the Race and Ethnic Studies program at the University of Southern Maine. He has also taught in the Sociology Department at the University of Dayton and at the University of the West Indies (Mona, Jamaica).
His teaching and research focus on father involvement among immigrant fathers from the English-speaking Caribbean residing in the United States, Canada, and England. Dr. Gibbs has examined a range of related areas, including conceptualizations of fatherhood, the role of religion in fathering, and social work practice with immigrant fathers.

- The Maine Department of Education (DOE) invited me to join a Steering Committee to evaluate the Maine State Content Standard Review, 2023.
- Conducted two interactive workshops with a participatory art gallery walks of data portraits inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois data, 2023.
- Portraits Visualizing Black America from the 1900 Paris Exposition.
- Worked with Maine Opportunities for Online Sustained Education (MOOSE), Department of Education to review material related to teaching race and African American history at key stages for teachers K-12 across the state of Maine, 2022.
- Representative related to LD 187: An Act To Require Education about African-American History and the History of Genocide and LD 1664: An Act To Integrate African American Studies into American History Education, 2021.
- Created and conducted workshops on the Social Construction of Race for K-12 teachers in Maine, 2018 and 2020.
