U.S. | Professional Development Scholarship
Presentations at field-related conferences, workshops, and trainings are an important aspect of students’ professional development. The Office of Student Affairs support students in these learning experiences through the Professional Development Scholarship Fund.
About the Professional Development Scholarship Fund
- Scholarships will only be available for students who are presenting at a conference (e.g., poster presentation, paper, panel, etc.).
- The Professional Development Scholarship is overseen and awarded by the Office of Student Affairs. The Office of Student Affairs reserves the right to change the requirements for the scholarship at any time.
- Scholarship funds are awarded as reimbursements for expenses related to professional development activities that are not required for, but are beneficial to, a student’s academic program or career.
- Scholarship funds can be used to cover conference fees, training materials, travel and housing expenses, and/or presentation supplies. No membership fees, personal expenses, food, or beverages will be covered.
- Scholarships are awarded during the fall, spring, and summer terms. Students should apply for funding for the term in which the conference event will take place. Students may apply for only one scholarship per academic year.
- Scholarships generally have a maximum payout of $300.
- As needed, priority will be given to students who have not received a Professional Development Scholarship in a previous academic year.
- Professional Development Scholarships are competitive and submission of an application does not guarantee that funding (in any particular amount) will be granted.
- Applicants must be enrolled at least half time at Adler University during the semester in which the conference takes place and be in good academic standing.
Application instructions
Students must complete an online scholarship application. The application will require submission of conference information, budget information, a short personal statement, and a copy of the presentation abstract.
Applications and reimbursement requests must be submitted according to the following schedule:
Fall (through start of Spring)
- Applications due by: Sept. 30.
- Deadline to request reimbursement: Jan. 15.

- Deadline to request reimbursement: May 15.
Summer (through start of Fall)

Awards will be decided by a points system within the reimbursement process. Students will be awarded a scholarship must submit a reimbursement request which includes:
- Receipts totaling or exceeding the amount of funding awarded. (5 points)
- A 5-page reflection essay. For the essay, identify and describe two important concepts, research finding, theory, or idea that you learned at the professional development event. Reflect on why this idea is important to your field or your personal learning. Finally, apply this idea to your own life by exploring how it will help you be a more socially responsible practitioner. Your essay may be used for Adler marketing, so use graduate level writing and consider a professional audience. (25 points)
- A photograph of yourself at your conference presentation. (5 points)
- A brief description of someone you met at the conference and how they will/might be able to assist you in your professional development. (A session presenter, someone you networked with at a reception, someone within the field who asked questions about your presentation or made recommendations about future research, etc.) (10 points)
