“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”

OVERVIEW
Dorinne (pronounced: Doreen) Banks is an academic librarian with over 20 years of experience supporting the diverse research needs of students at all learning levels. Her career began as an elementary school teacher and morphed into a second career in higher education after earning a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree.
She came to Adler University in 2021 in her current role as online librarian, providing virtual research instruction, library workshops, and one-on-one personal assistance to Adler students in online and hybrid programs. Knowing that graduate students lead stressful lives — balancing family life, a career, and a host of other obligations in addition to their coursework— Dorinne brings empathic qualities to her work with students by sharing tips and strategies for making the research process less stressful.
Dorinne brings an equity-focused approach to course materials used at Adler University. Her research passion and professional service contributions center around the use of open educational resources (OER) as an affordable alternative to traditional college course textbooks. She collaboratively works with Adler’s instructional design team (EDI) and individual faculty members who are interested in switching to OER course materials.
Most recently, Dorinne procured a $30,000 OER grant award from the State of Illinois to fund the Adler Library’s OER Course Transformation Program. As project manager for the two-year grant, she led the creation of a graduate-level open textbook written by Adler faculty member, Peter Ji, Ph.D.
